The Organization

The University Medical Group (UMG) is a professional association of over 400 physicians/psychologists conducting their medical practice through a clinical department of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba, or one of its affiliated teaching hospitals.  As the business/accounting office for full time clinical teaching members, UMG promotes member development and the development of their Departments. The UMG provides: professional, independent business management expertise; facilitation of human resources; consultation and liaison resources; opportunities for select programs and underwriting of special benefits; and additional services which help attract, retain and reward competent and dedicated faculty and staff.


The Opportunity

We are seeking a seasoned executive to provide leadership to UMG and wise counsel to physician members.  Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) leads the day-to-day activities of the organization.  The nature and focus of the role will continue to evolve as the needs of the members change within the health care system.  A key role is played by the ED in the recruitment and orientation process for new physicians, providing information and support as they establish their practice.  The ED manages a team of five to provide administrative, business management, financial and human resources services to the member physicians.  Responsibilities include:

  • Represent and advocate on behalf of physician members
  • Provide a consultation and liaison resource for members, departments and external agencies
  • Provide Human Resources and Labour Relations expertise
  • Provide professional, independent business management expertise and services
  • Provide opportunities for select programs and the underwriting of specific member and staff benefits
  • Advise and assist the members with fee structure negotiation, benefits and investments

Selection Criteria

  • University degree is essential with expertise in Human Resource Management and/or business – CHRP designation preferred
  • Minimum 10 years experience in a senior HR or ED role
  • Knowledgeable in compensation, employee benefits and policy issues
  • Proven negotiating skills, labour relations and/or human resources background
  • Strong understanding of accounting and financial management principles required
  • Healthcare and/or professional services related experience
  • Financial designation an asset
  • The successful candidate will be a self-starter with superb communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
