The Organization:
Gerdau Ameristeel is the fourth largest steel company and the second largest minimill steel producer in North America. Through an integrated network of minimills, steel scrap recycling facilities, and downstream operations, the company serves customers throughout North America. The company is headquartered in Toronto, with executive offices in Tampa, Florida.

With 17 recycling facilities, the company ranks as the second largest recycler of ferrous scrap in North America. Their recycling activities reflect their core value of Community and Environmental Awareness. It received the prestigious Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) Distinguished Recycler of the Year Award.

 

This position is for the Selkirk Division, one of the largest metal recycling plants in western Canada and Gerdau Ameristeel’s most diverse recycling facility. Located 30 miles north of Winnipeg, MB, this facility has been in operation since 1969.

 

Human Resources Representative

 

Reporting to the Human Resources Manager, Recycling Division, Head Office, the Human Resources Representative will proactively cultivate and maintain effective employee and labour relations at the Manitoba Recycling Division in Selkirk, Manitoba. He/she will work primarily with hourly and salaried employees, properly applying, company programs, collective bargaining agreements, group policies and practices as well as approved local procedures. 

 

Key Responsibilities Include:

·         Administer and interpret collective bargaining agreements including disciplinary action;

·         Resolve grievances and handle investigations;

·         Assist with disability and workplace claims management;

·         Establish and maintain liaison between hourly and salaried employees and management to communicate company policies, benefits and information to employees and answer questions

·         Conduct recruitment, screening, interviewing, reference checking, and orientation of new employees.

·         Administer payroll;

·         Coordinate and monitor employee training records; benefits administration; wellness issues;

·         Assist with preparation of basic operator training programs;

·         Conduct basic safety training programs;

·         Assist in administering service award program and other company-sponsored activities.

 

Selection Criteria:

·         University degree in a related field, post-secondary education in Human Resources Management and working towards the CHRP designation.

·         Three to five years progressive experience in a labour/employee relations.

·         Strong knowledge in all areas of Human Resources policies procedures and employment legislation, both Canadian and U.S.

·         Experience working in a unionized-manufacturing facility within a corporate environment

·         Strong relationship-building skills at all levels of an organization

·         Excellent communication skills, verbal and written

·         Ability to respect confidentiality and to work in a fast-paced environment.

·         Possess strong computer and presentation skills.
